The teaching of Geography will ensure that geographical enquiry and skills are used when developing knowledge and understanding of places, patterns and processes, and environmental change and sustainable development. In the teaching of Geography, children will be encouraged to ask lots of questions about geography. These aspects are developed through the study of places and themes set out in Topic work. Learning takes place both inside and outside of the classroom to provide children with opportunities to use geographical skills and resources such as maps, atlases, aerial photographs and ICT, to answer these questions. Children will learn the vocabulary needed to talk about geographical ideas.
During Key Stage 2 children investigate a variety of people, places and environments in the UK and abroad, and start to make links between different places in the world. They find out how people affect the environment and how they are affected by it.
Geography Intent
R: relevant, research-based, reflective
Our Geography curriculum develops:
- a strong understanding of the core skills needed for successful geographers, such as being able to read different maps, understand human and physical processes and be aware of cultural diversity.
- exploring places both within our local area and further field, which are relevant to the pupils, so the children are aware of the world that surrounds them.
- the skills adults need to teach geography, reflecting what we know about best practice.
E: engaging, enquiry-led
Our Geography curriculum:
- is supported by engaging resources, which children are able to explore, depending on their geographical knowledge of the topics studied.
- provides opportunities for the children to investigate different geographical topics , so they can successfully answer different enquiry questions using their critical thinking , as well as their own creativity and personal experiences.
A: aspirational, achievement for all
Our Geography curriculum:
- aspires to discover more about the world through reading, travel or media.
- helps to make greater sense of the world by organising and connecting information about people, places, processes and environments.
- gives a chance to develop geography skills at whichever level they are, so that progress is made.
- develops the pupils’ willingness to want to travel, see the world and experience different cultures and traditions.
L: for life-long love of geography
Our Geography curriculum:
- develops an appreciation for the planet, which allows the children to build a deeper understanding of the world they live in, the natural environment, human landscapes and all the connections between them.
- Offers opportunities for pupils to explore outdoors through fieldwork. This will also develop their knowledge through observing, mapping, measuring and recording which creates a deeper understanding of the world.
